Mowing seems like a simple process
but there is actually more to it than meets the eye. We make sure to mow all of our properties between 3" to 4.5" inches. This practice helps promote a healthy lawn in many different ways. One way is to ensure a healthy root system. The higher the turf the deeper the roots. Also taller grass helps the lawn retain moisture for longer periods of time.
You don't want your grass to be any taller than 4.5"
because the lawn will begin to lay over and retain too much moisture which can promote mold. We also make sure that when using the trimmer around poles, trees and the home that the grass is trimmed the same height that the lawn is cut. Trimming too short can cause the lawn to burn and then weeds will pop up around the trimmed area. We also use edgers around all concrete areas such as sidewalks, driveways and patios. The edger uses a metal blade that cuts the turf vertically promoting thick turf around concrete areas where the concrete tends to get hot in the summer and damaging the turf surrounding concrete areas. Edgers also give the lawn a nice crisp look as opposed to trimmers that cut the grass at an angle.
We commonly use mowers with mulching kits to help promote a naturally healthy lawn. Instead of just blowing the grass out of the discharge area of the mower that area is blocked off. Special blades push the grass up and cut the grass clippings multiple times creating very fine clippings that drop to the base of the lawn which then break down and feed the lawn naturally. Also we mow in a different direction each mowing. Mowing in the same pattern week after week will cause ruts and compacted soil. Also changing direction gives the lawn a more aesthetically pleasing look.
